Proud to be Canadian

Proud to be Canadian

I often get asked where I'm from, and when I answer "uh...Canada?" people will still say something along the lines of "No, but where are you originally from??". To which I answer...CANADA.

For some reason, the need people have to identify my "origins" because my skin colour indicates that I couldn't possibly be full on Canadian, frustrates me.  I think that anyone who is a first generation Canadian can relate.

While I am still connected to my roots, I was born and raised in Canada. My parents were born in India (I talk about it here) and raised me to learn about our culture. I can speak, read, and write in Punjabi and I love my culture. However, having grown up in Ontario and now living in BC, I find that I identify a lot more with Canadian culture.

This year, Canada celebrates its 150th anniversary and I am pretty darn proud to be living here. This is a country that welcomes diversity and I look forward to the day that I won't be questioned about where I'm "really" from.
