The Athleisure Trend of 2017
If you've been keeping your eye on this season's trends, you will definitely have stumbled upon the whole idea of athleisure. I actually have a story for you.
About 7 years ago, when I first moved to Vancouver from Toronto, I experienced the oddest culture shock. I would show up to my university classes and constantly be told that I looked "so fancy" for school. I didn't get what anyone was talking about; I would be wearing a pair of skinny jeans and boots. As the weeks went on, I began to notice a trend. The reason everyone constantly thought that I was so overdressed was because they were all wearing Lululemon sweats to school.
As the year progressed, I started to give in and gradually my wardrobe began to shift to a far more casual look. I started going out in yoga pants and fitted tees. Now, this worked really well in a city like Vancouver, however when I moved to Paris I was in for a reality check.
So fast forward 2 years to when I had just freshly moved to Paris. One day I decided to take the tram to a class and I hopped on in my Lululemon sweats and sneakers. Looking around I noticed people staring and didn't get why. I then looked at them...looked at myself...and back at them. I was horrified!!! There I was in sweats and sneakers, and everyone else was in high heels and tailored pants. From that day, I promised myself I wouldn't be caught dead in basic sweats and tees out, unless I was working out.
So here we are, it's 2017, and athleisure is IN!
You might have guessed, I'm caught with a dilemma in front of me. While I promised myself to never be caught dead in sweats, I have to stay on trend! Luckily for me, the athleisure trend for 2017 still leans on the side of chic. Pairing some casual pieces with trendy, slightly dressy pieces, is totally appropriate. ;-)
Is there a trend that you may not have initially been comfortable with? How did you make it work for you?
